In this fast-paced world, we all share one common goal. The goal is to strive hard and work to the best of our abilities for a living. While we strive to become financially independent, we may also experience burnout in the long run. Burnout and mental health are intertwined and one tends to affect the other. To tackle burnout, it is essential to understand and find a balance between work and personal life. We all deal with workplace stressors; however, not acknowledging and working on these stressors can lead to burnout.

What is burnout? It is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by prolonged and excessive stress. It is often due to work demands and other aspects of life.

Frequent Causes of Work Stress

There are a few frequent causes of work stress. These causes could also be signs of burnout. Let us look at some causes of work stress that would lead to burnout.

  1. Poor work relationships: When you work in a team, having healthy relationships with your colleagues and teammates is extremely important. Having poor relationships is detrimental to work. This leads to less support from teammates as well as managers, which leads to overworking.

  2. Insecurity about the job: You tend to overwork and walk on eggshells at work because of the fear of getting fired. This can lead to taking on more job roles. This may also make it difficult for you to say 'no' at work if it is out of your bandwidth.

  3. High pressure at work and an unhealthy work culture: An unhealthy work culture is the leading cause of burnout. Managers and team leaders who micromanage and pressurise the employees can lead to burnout in the team, along with work stress, frustration, and anger.

  4. Poor work-life balance: Creating a healthy work-life balance is difficult but not impossible. Having clear boundaries at work and having dedicated working hours is essential. Having a poor work-life balance leads to spending hours completing your work, with less leisure time. This leads to stress, frustration, a disturbed sleep schedule, and much more.

  5. Lack of control: Lack of control may look like not being able to prioritise your tasks, or procrastination at work, leading to increased workload and unmet deadlines. This contributes to work stress and eventually leads to burnout if not addressed on time.

Finding Balance: Work Stress and Burnout

Now that we have explored the reasons for work stress, let us also look at the solution. Finding the right balance is important to tackle burnout and work stress. This requires attention to the smallest signs of burnout and also actively working on them.

  1. Building workplace boundaries: Build appropriate workplace boundaries. Learn to say 'no' to a task if you are swamped with work. Instead of working overtime, you can prioritise the leftover task the next day and rather get some much-needed rest.

  2. Having a schedule and control over your work: Prioritise your tasks and work on one task at a time. Have a realistic schedule that you can follow at your workplace. A certain amount of control is needed over your work to handle things in a professional manner.

  3. Open communication with teammates and seniors: There has to be open communication with your colleagues. Delegate work if it is becoming overwhelming for you, and ask for help when needed. This ensures that you don't end up overworking or taking on a lot of workload.

  4. Practicing self-care: Take short breaks at work. Avoid working on your day off and take that time to pause, reflect on how the week has been, and set new goals for the coming week.

  5. Values and goals: Understand and recognise your work values and goals. Take on tasks or job roles that align with your values and goals in order to grow as an individual.
