“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks. ”
- John Moir
We spend most of our time within the four walls of a room, be it an office, college or our bedrooms. There is something new happening every day in the world. This often makes us feel as if we are lagging behind in life and so we keep on running in the rat- race, always trying to be better. We forgot to pause for a moment and take some rest, ignore our well-being, and lose ourselves while trying to keep up with everything happening around us.
Such a hectic lifestyle creates a lot of mental pressure on us. We easily get frustrated. irritated and angry, and the risk of depression and anxiety also increases. Our busy lives have not only weakened our connection with ourselves but also with nature. Mankind is getting distant from nature day by day. It’s time for us to reconnect with our mother nature. Nature does wonders when it comes to maintaining our mental health. Connecting with and spending time in nature is beneficial for our mental well-being.
Various studies have been conducted which highlight the benefits of nature walks. For instance, one of the studies compared the mental health of 2 groups of participants- one group spent time in natural environment and the other in built environment. The study showed noticeable psychological differences between the 2 groups. This study also found that having a view of nature from one’s window while being indoors can have cognitive benefits too.
Here are some ways in which taking walks in nature can improve our mood and benefit our mental health:

Taking walks in nature is an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Natural surroundings are often quiet and provide a peaceful environment for an individual to unwind and relax. Spending time in nature reduces the level of cortisol which is the primary stress hormone in our body. Reduced cortisol level decrease stress and promote a sense of calmness.
2. Release of Chemicals in Brain

When we take walks in nature, our brain releases various chemicals that improve mood and reduce anxiety and depression. For example, movement of walking releases endorphins, which are also known as body's natural painkillers, promoting feelings of pleasure and euphoria. Exposure to natural light boosts serotonin levels which enhances mood. Additionally, being surrounded by natural beauty releases dopamine, leading to feelings of reward and motivation. These chemical responses help relieves stress and negative emotions, making nature walks an effective tool for reducing anxiety and depression and improving overall mental well-being.
3. Increased Levels of Energy

A lot of times we depend on caffeine, sugary snacks and energy drinks for energy boost. Unlike these artificial and temporary sources of energy, the energy received from nature walks is natural and more sustainable. The physical activity, fresh air and exposure to sunlight refreshes the body and mind and makes one feel energized.
4. Better Sleep Schedule and Physical Exercise

When we spend time outdoors during the day, especially in the morning or early afternoon, it helps regulate the body's internal clock which produces melatonin, the hormone which is responsible for sleep. This contributes to a deeper and more restful sleep at night. Walking in nature also helps maintain physical health as it provides gentle but an effective form of exercise to the body. It improves heart health, lung function, circulation and flexibility hence leading to overall well being.
5. Greenery Soothes our Eyes

Green strains our eyes the least is the most comforting colours for our eyes. Greenery, along with giving a break to our eyes from strain, improves our vision, calms us down and reduces any eye irritation. Hence looking at greenery can be a great exercise for our eye muscles and can keep them healthy. It is suggested that professionals and students who have high screen time spend some time in nature observing trees which can relax their eyes.
