Embracing Imperfection: Letting Go Of Unrealistic Expectations

Emotional Resilience

"It's fine" is not just a word but a beautiful way to express "You're unique". In this fast-paced and demanding society, perfection overtakes pursuit. Becoming perfect in every field, such as the workplace or educational field, isn't about being ourselves. Raising one's voice and saying, "It's fine" is a sign of courage, self-acceptance, and growth. In this persistent pursuit, we lose sight of the beauty of imperfection.

Being "YOU" is unique in itself for every individual. The constant conflict to be perfect creates fear of failure which ceases the opportunity to be the excellent , progressive version of ourselves. Embracing imperfection leads us to be more open and creative in our own way. Allowing vulnerability helps to be resilient and more open to learn. Learning leads to growth, creativity and innovation .

PERFECTIONISM: RIGID PROGRESSION

Desire for perfection leads to relentless pursuit of flawlessness and rigidity in growth. It causes constant criticism of oneself, leading to self-hatred. A person's focus on flaws prevents them from noticing their strengths. Intrusive thoughts such as "I have to have perfect grades" and "I need the perfect body" hinder self-esteem and cultivate rigidity in personal development, with more focus on destination than self-improvement. A healthy perfectionist or imperfection embraces our progress and well-being.

Taking on new challenges and flowing with every new opportunity couldn't be easy sometimes. With an open heart, welcoming it and taking up the learning develops self-improvement. You might not be perfect, and perfection is a myth. But the uniqueness you have, not everyone has. You're great in your own way. Comparison and society's judgement don't define a person's worth.

BE UNIQUE: THE JOURNEY TO ACCEPTING "YOU"

The journey you've begun in your own way defines you. Embracing your own beauty defines strength. You're worth everything. You are precious and unique the way you are. Not comparing yourself, not measuring failure or success, defines you in a unique way. You learn from failure, and you celebrate every little achievement you win by yourself. "You're strong" not to look down on yourself and be worthy.

Embracing one's own journey gives one the strength to go on a new journey. It cultivates self-confidence and resilience. By accepting "YOU", you become more enthusiastic and compassionate towards yourself and others.

VULNERABILITY MAKES YOU STRONGER

Perfectionism has a major impact on one's self-worth. When we think of vulnerability, we often associate it with weakness or a lack of control. It is natural to feel uncomfortable when we expose our true selves, flaws and all, to others. However, it is precisely in these moments of vulnerability that we have the opportunity to grow and learn.

Embracing vulnerability creates an environment that values authenticity. When we are willing to be vulnerable, we encourage others to do the same. This fosters a culture of trust and openness where individuals feel comfortable sharing their ideas, concerns, and struggles. As a result, teams become more collaborative and innovative, as diverse perspectives are welcomed and respected. Besides, embracing vulnerability encourages personal development. When we are willing to take risks and step outside of our comfort zones, we open ourselves up to new experiences and opportunities to grow.

AUTHENTICITY: YOU SHINE LIKE DIAMOND

Rather than fixating on achieving flawlessness, prioritise personal growth and development. Understand that growth is a continuous process that involves learning, adapting, and evolving. Emphasising growth means embracing challenges and setbacks as opportunities for learning and improvement. By focusing on growth, you can cultivate resilience, expand your skills and knowledge, and reach new levels of success. This mindset encourages self-reflection, self-improvement, and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone.

LETTING GO OF UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

Being unable to accept reality creates a whirlwind of unrealistic expectations. Despite being challenging, we end up embracing imperfection because that's who we are. We ultimately find the extraordinary in the ordinary. Here are some ways to find the same for you:

  • Validating ourselves

  •  Practicing self-compassion

  •  Positive self-talking

  • Seeking help from trusted loved ones

  • Focusing on progression

Embracing imperfection is a journey, and it's okay to take small steps towards letting go of perfectionism. Be patient and compassionate with yourself as you navigate this process.

NOT BEING YOU < BEING YOU

Perils of Perfection

  1. Leads a person to be disappointed, feel unaccepted, and lose confidence in themselves.

  2. Creates hopelessness, fear of failure, and self-criticism.

  3. Prevents us to look for new pathways and hinders the excellence of progression and growth.

  4. Creates unrealistic expectations and escapism when facing reality.

Impact of Imperfection

  1. Gives joy, freedom to be ourselves, and recognition for our iniquity.

  2. Develop self-esteem, courage, and acceptance of challenges and opportunities.

  3. Self-acceptance encourages development and creativity.

  4. Leads to authenticity and helps us focus on progression.

A DEVELOPED MINDSET

Perfectionism tendencies often dominate, but developing a growth mindset can be a valuable weapon against the pressures of perfectionism. A growth mindset enables people to welcome challenges, persevere in the face of obstacles, and consistently learn and evolve. It requires us to change our outlook on failure, seeing it not as a hindrance but as a chance for personal development.

Perfectionists seem to fear failure and criticise themselves brutally. A growth mindset helps them learn and, despite whatever the result, not be so hard on their own.
