Life throws punches. its a given. From heartbreak to many traumatic events, these challenges can leave us feeling lost and defeated. But what if I told you there is a weapon to navigate these storms and emerge stronger? It's called "resilience".

Isn't it chilling to imagine how hard it is to embark on a journey of your own in a new country or with a new lifestyle, but you have to start from the bottom? Starting from scratch, living happily after that with financial stability, high moral values, caring and gentleness, kindness and willingness to lend a hand to support families in need, they are valued in society today. How resilient are they to have faced all the challenges and bounced back to reach where they are today!  We are all resilient, we just need to stick to the coping strategies that facilitate our situations.

Resilience from The Very Beginning

Young children face adversities too! During development as a child, after they fall, they try and learn to crawl, stand up, and step forward and walk. After they blabber or cry to communicate, they learn to utter that first word and talk. If the development is jeopardised in any stage, the carer has to follow some strategies to nurture the strengths of the baby. Now Let’s take an example of a kid in late childhood or early adolescence being bullied every day in school and not finding the courage to fight back or do anything about it. If resilience and coping strategies were taught in that school or at home, that kid can attain the strength from within him to fight back and take a step against those bullies. Going forward, facing rejection, heart break, exam failure, career….. you know how the list goes!

Adapting to Coping Strategies

Stress comes in different shapes and sizes. But before you let it drown you, here are some common and proven practices that can help you deal with stress and build resilience:

  1. Listen To Your Body: Your body shows physically that you are stressed. Fatigue, difficulty in breathing, sleeping problems, indigestion are some of the signs - name it, tame it. Acknowledge your feelings and name it to yourself, a friend and a mental health professional to help you strategize and act on it.

  2. Work On Your Life Style: Mental health significantly stands on your lifestyle. Eat well, sleep enough and exercise regularly. Practice meditation to help yourself deal with stress and bring focus in life.

  3. Stay Connected: Strong social connection are like a warm hug for your soul. Nurture your existing relationships and don't be afraid to put yourself out there to make new friends.

  4.  Explore Your New Interests: Step out of your comfort zone and explore new interests. Take a class or two and learn new skills. Growth is the enemy of stagnation. Keep working on becoming the better version of yourself.

  5. Reach Out: Asking for help when you need it, is not a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength and self-awareness. Seeking for the help and support only helps you to rise up and move forward.

                                       Resilience Is a Journey

Resilience can be influenced by several factors, primarily it’s your mind-set. Over thinking, blaming and not doing anything about it, takes you nowhere. Take control of the things you can. Optimism and a positive outlook helps you love yourself unconditionally and manifests positive outcomes. The second factor being social support is a two way street. “When you do something good, it comes back to you”. If you find someone wanting to be heard, listen and let them talk out their feelings. If you think they need help, go ahead and suggest them to seek help from a mental health professional. You might make a huge difference in their life. When you become resilient, you inspire those around you. As important as your mind-set and social support, self-care practices play a huge role in how resilient you turn out to be when the problem is at your door step.

Nothing can stop you when you decide to overcome your obstacle. When the problem is in front of you, and you can do nothing to avoid it, it is here to make you stronger and you will be shaped to face any such situations in future only stronger, more equipped and experienced. All you have to do is start with deciding to overcome that obstacle. You don’t have to fight alone. If you notice it to start being too much, book yourself an appointment with a mental health professional at Heart It Out and seek for the necessary support and guidance. :)
