The state of digital addiction among India's youth is a growing concern, with a significant number of adolescents being affected. Studies indicate that a substantial percentage of Indian school-going adolescents are at risk of problematic internet use, with prevalence rates of moderate and severe internet addiction ranging from 21.5% to 2.6%. Furthermore, a study on Indian college students found that 0.7% were classified as addicts based on Young's criteria, with these individuals reporting high levels of anxiety and depression. The rise in internet addiction is attributed to factors such as early access to gadgets, online school activities, and the increasing use of social media, gaming, and videos among youth. This trend highlights the need for increased awareness, monitoring, and potential interventions to address the negative impacts of excessive digital media consumption among India's youth.
The need for digital detox among Indian youth is becoming increasingly apparent due to the negative impact of excessive screen time on their mental health. A survey in India indicated that 60% of youngsters aged 9 to 17 spend more than three hours daily on social media or gaming platforms. Excessive screen time has been linked to mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, sleep disruption, and social isolation.

Various initiatives have been taken to promote digital detox, especially in rural areas. For instance, Vadgaon village in Maharashtra state has implemented a daily digital detox from 7 to 8:30 p.m., where residents are encouraged to turn off their TVs and smartphones to reconnect with the real world and engage in face-to-face interactions. This initiative has led to improved social interactions, better concentration among children, and a reduction in stress and anxiety.
Similarly, the Jain community in India launched a digital fasting challenge in 2021, where young people agreed to shun screens for 12 hours every day for 50 days to be mentally "cleansed". This challenge aimed to wean young people off their phones and promote mental well-being.
Digital detox can have several benefits for students, including improved sleep quality, enhanced social skills, increased physical activity, opportunities for self-reflection, enhanced creativity, reduced cyberbullying, and improved overall well-being5. By intentionally disconnecting from digital devices and online activities, students can restore mental and physical well-being, promote mindfulness, and reduce feelings of addiction to screens.

Digital Detox Retreats: Digital detox retreats have gained popularity as a way to disconnect from screens and reconnect with the real world. These retreats offer a controlled environment where participants can engage in outdoor activities, mindfulness practices, and group therapy sessions.
Therapeutic Screen Time Management: Therapists and mental health professionals can help individuals develop a healthy relationship with technology and set limits on screen use.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Through CBT, therapists work with individuals to identify negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with screen addiction and help them develop healthier coping strategies.
Mindfulness and Meditation: Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, can help individuals become more aware of their screen time habits. It promotes self-reflection and self-regulation.
Education and Awareness: Schools and parents play a crucial role in educating youth about responsible screen time usage. Promoting awareness of the potential consequences of excessive screen time can empower young individuals to make healthier choices.
Physical Activity: Encouraging physical activities as an alternative to screen time can be beneficial. Exercise releases endorphins, which improve mood and reduce stress.
Parental Involvement: Parents need to be actively involved in their children's screen time habits by setting boundaries and being role models for responsible technology use.
