In India, inter-caste marriage is an ancient cultural tradition dating back 2000 years, where individuals are expected to marry within their own community.
Some believe the reason for this could be, inter- caste marriages can dilute or erode one’s culture or identity. Some also believe inter- caste couples are at a higher risk of facing economic and financial challenges due to historical class difference and the financial status of the family.
With the abolition of inter-caste marriages by the Indian Government and more people adapting to a western way of life, inter-caste marriages have seen a rise in India in recent years.
While exact figures can vary, according to available data:
The National Family Health Survey-4 (NFHS-4) reported that inter-caste marriages accounted for approximately 5.8% of all marriages in India.
A study by the All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) suggested that around 15% of marriages in urban areas were inter-caste.
The 2011 Census of India recorded an increase in inter-caste marriages compared to previous decades
