In today’s fast-paced world, an individual’s worth is often measured by their end result or great accomplishment, which compels them to prioritise and focus solely on the destination and not the journey. However, they forget to enjoy the journey, the process, the mistakes, the lessons and the small victories. It is as though an artist is so focused on creating a masterpiece, he/she/they forgets to enjoy painting different strokes and vibrant colours on the canvas. Celebrating the small wins can, more often than not, be more gratifying than achieving something great. But before we make haste and jump into the “why” of celebrating the small wins, let’s look at “what” small wins are. Small wins are minor achievements or milestones that are accomplished on the way to a larger goal. They differ from person to person, can be daily, weekly or monthly and can be achieved in different aspects of life, like personal, academic, professional/career, health, social, etc.
For example, for a student a small win could be studying for one hour every day. For someone working professionally, it could be completing a task ahead of schedule. In the case of fitness and health, working out three or four times a week for a month can be considered a small win.
Now lovely folks let's explore the importance of recognising the small wins you achieve!
1. Tracking Progress: When you set a long-term goal to achieve, it is important to keep track of your progress to find reassurance that you are moving forward in the right direction. We can do that by acknowledging the small milestones we achieve throughout the journey and gain a sense of fulfilment to keep us going.
2. Building a Positive Mindset: While pursuing a goal, an individual will have to face obstacles and difficulties that can negatively impact one’s mindset. So, when an achievement, regardless of how minor it may seem, is celebrated, it allows your mind to focus on the positive aspect of the journey, which will enable a person to outgrow challenges and remain consistent in times of difficult circumstances.
3. Enhance Confidence: Everyone can achieve great things in life and celebrating small wins can serve as a reminder to that. It can make you aware of your potential and help you grow. It can also be an indication that your hard work, effort, and resilience will pay off, and you are moving in the right direction. This will also provide empowerment and allow you to step outside your comfort zone.
4. Enhances Motivation and Momentum: Acknowledging your achievements will boost your self-esteem and motivation. When you reward yourself for your efforts, it becomes positive reinforcement for your brain to continue working hard and putting in effort.
Having long term aspirations and goals is important in life, as they provide us with a vision and purpose but appreciating your small wins, hard work and commitment to the goal is equally crucial. You can learn to be content and happy with your day-to-day life by recognising the small-scale victories and being grateful for all the opportunities that come your way. So, beautiful people, take a minute, breathe and look at how far you've come, embrace your journey and live in the moment.
