There are many articles out there that say that meditation, the practice of mindfulness, etc., is good for maintaining mental health. Although these methods are proven to be beneficial, other ways will also help boost mental health. What you eat also impacts brain development and mental health. It is important to keep track of what you are putting in your body, as this can bring about significant changes in the way you feel and function. One such way of doing so is with the help of Omega-3 and Vitamin D!

Omega-3 mainly plays a role in the development of the brain, which is reflected in its functioning and ageing. An Omega-3 deficiency can prone one to psychiatric disorders like depression, autism, dementia, schizophrenia, ADHD, bipolar disorder, etc. Omega-3 travels easily through the brain to work with mood molecules in the brain and has anti-inflammatory properties to reduce the impacts of depression. Clinical trials held by Harvard are looking further into whether and how omega-3 supplements can prevent depression in older adults. This seems to be one of the promising, natural ways to combat mood disorders. Moreover, it reduces stress by decreasing cortisol levels. Studies have shown that a regular intake of Omega-3 supplements means a lower probability of experiencing depression and can also improve conditions in those who have already been diagnosed. Apart from supplements, one can also incorporate Omega-3 naturally through their diet. This would include fish, flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, eggs, etc.

Another study revealed that both Vitamin D and Omega-3 supplements improved cases of depression, anxiety, and quality of sleep, especially in women. Vitamin D deficiency is a common pattern, and recent research highlights the significant role it plays in mood regulation. Similar to Omega-3, Vitamin D helps reduce inflammation because of its anti-inflammatory properties, which have implications for mood disorders. Vitamin D also regulates serotonin levels, which is one of the happy chemicals in the brain. Similar to Omega-3, adding Vitamin D naturally as well. Firstly, sun exposure produces Vitamin D in the body. Secondly, foods that are rich in Vitamin D are egg yolks, mushrooms, and fish (has both Omega-3 and Vitamin D!). Normal sun exposure every day can also help boost your overall well-being! Just stand in the sun and feel the difference.

In conclusion, both Omega-3 and Vitamin D aid in boosting mental health through the roles they play in brain functioning, reducing stress levels, and anti-inflammatory effects. Implementing these into your daily diet can contribute to a better state of well-being on the whole. Also, remember to stand in the sun!

Keeping all this in mind, remember that there are people and professionals out there who will help you in any way that you require it. Please help empower yourself and others; sometimes, it just needs that one push towards seeking help (be that from a psychologist, psychiatrist, mental health worker, family, friends, or someone you trust).
