What is Stress?

A state of worry or mental tension due to some event in an individual’s surroundings. In simpler terms, we often feel exhausted or worried because something happened in our close environment that directly affected us. It may be due to homework, college assignments, business or job-related work, and even family problems. Even though we take stress lightly or for someone, it is even a regular day-to-day occurrence. If not managed properly, it can negatively affect us physically as well as mentally.

One of the major types of stress is workplace stress.  We have often experienced it; if not, we have seen how stressed our parents or friends are about their job or business. According to statistics, workplace stress only increases every year. In 2022, employees who experienced moderate-to-high level stress were 67%, but in 2023, the number increased to 76%. But don’t worry! This article will surely help you manage your work-life balance by dealing with stress!

What is Work-Life Balance?

So, first of all, let us learn what work-life balance actually is. Work-life balance actually overlaps career, community, health and well-being, and home. It is very important to maintain a healthy work-life balance in order to survive peacefully. So, let us explore how we can balance out our work and personal life!

  • Time management- Time management is one of the most important skills in managing stress. It involves listing out activities for the whole day in the morning, setting reminders for work-related meetings or family/personal events or meet-ups, limiting distractions like avoiding checking social media, and time-limiting tasks to make sure you are not giving too much time on one particular task that you forget to do other things.

  • Taking breaks- Take breaks whenever you get them. Get a coffee, grab a bit! Stretching is also advised if the workplace permits.

  • Vacation- Everybody deserves a vacation from their hectic schedule, so what are you waiting for? Go ahead and book your tickets (if you are on a long summer/winter break)!! Exploring new places is also very important as it exposes us to new environments. It increases our creativity as we are exposed to a new environment. This will also increase our creativity in the workplace.

  • Flexibility- It is the ability to adapt to some unforeseen situations effectively. It is not necessary that everything goes according to plan. So, it is essential to adjust our schedule whenever needed.

  • Professional help- Guidance for stress management from a therapist or a counsellor is also beneficial. They can effectively guide us on what should be done next, what should be avoided, etc. Heart It Out has an excellent team of therapists who can constructively help you.

It is extremely important for all of us to manage our stress positively. If not handled properly, it can lead to ‘burn-out’, which then causes some severe issues both mentally and physically. We all know that work and personal life are equally important, but managing both can be a bit difficult. Start managing your time, effectively utilise your breaks, go on vacations, learn to adapt and visit a therapist if necessary. We don’t want to lack in well-being as well as career, do we? So start working on balancing responsibilities and well-being!
