“Eww, brother, eww, what's that….” mumbled 13-year-old Safa as she sat down to complete her homework. Social media has undeniably influenced all of us in numerous ways, but its impact on adolescents is often long-lasting and can manifest in various forms.Adolescence is a critical and formative period, marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. This phase is characterised by rapid physical, emotional, and social changes, and increasingly, social media is playing a significant role in shaping the experiences of adolescents in South Asia.

Popular Platforms and Adolescent Engagement

Popular platforms like Instagram and SnapChat have seamlessly integrated into the routine of adolescents, facilitated by the widespread availability of smartphones and internet accessibility. These platforms provide a space for self-expression, exploration, and connection, which adolescents find highly relatable. As 14 year old Rawia, who uses her mother’s phone to watch instagram reels, states that they resonate deeply with individuals in her age group.

Understanding the impact of social media on adolescents is imperative as their engagement with social media not only reflects individual choices but also broader consequences and dynamics.Social media usage among adolescents is widespread in South Asia with studies suggesting a high engagement on platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

Positive Aspects of Social Media

Social media platforms like LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc. serve as essential tools for connection and conversation. They enable networking with professionals, accessing valuable resources and opportunities, exploring small business ventures, connecting with peers online, and building online communities. These platforms inspire confidence, boost morale, and provide opportunities to grow, making them an indispensable asset in today’s digital age.

Negative Influences and Challenges

While social media offers plethora of opportunities, it impacts users in a multi-faceted manner, with many of them often falling prey to crimes such as cyberbullying, contributing to concerns related to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, low socio-emotional functioning, etc. The negative influences of social media act as the other side of the coin, with adolescents engaging in trolling leading to body-imaging, lifestyle remarks, and insensitive comments. Consumption of explicit content, partaking in substance use for perceived social standing, etc remain as some dark alleys of social media. The repercussions are often manifested as suicidal thoughts, feelings of isolation, depressive symptoms as psychological symptoms and physical symptoms such as changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, weight loss or gain, etc. Social media addiction is a growing concern, particularly among adolescents, leading to excessive screen time and decreased real-life interactions. This addiction can result in negative impacts on mental health, including increased anxiety and depression.

The impact of social media on academic performance and concentration is a topic of ongoing debate. While social media acts as an asset by providing valuable resources, internship and volunteering opportunities, and networking with experienced individuals, all of which ultimately contribute to increased performance,. Conversely, constant stimulation and ambiguous content consumption hinder concentration and focus, therefore resulting in decreased academic performance. A few strategies that can be adopted  for leveraging social media for educational purposes include incorporating digital literacy skills into the curriculum and promoting responsible usage habits among students.

Global Connectivity and Cultural Exchange

Social media has further strengthened connections across borders, often bringing about the passing of trends and ideas among various age groups.Ultimately, witnessing people from all corners of the world share a part of their lives, experiences, acts of kindness,  and voices on important matters to raise awareness alongside silly trends that bring laughter serves as vital factors for inclusive growth, making humans more humane. This also inspires young users by showcasing diversity and fostering a sense of empathy and connectivity across varied cultures and communities.

What Can We Do?

The influence of social media is multifaceted for young users, and in fact, for users of all age groups. Here’s what we can do to harness the positive aspects of social media and mitigate the negative side of it:

1.Fostering digital literacy skills: Digital literacy equips users to critically assess online content, understand privacy and updating features, make them aware of scam markets online, and recognise cyberbullying and misinformation present online.

2.Monitored use of social media: It involves setting boundaries to prevent excessive use.Parents and guardians, with the collaboration of adolescents, can establish certain rules, such as no phone during meal times, and encourage more face-to-face interactions by involving them in various activities such as playing a game together, painting, travelling together, etc.

3.Designated time allocation: The designation of a certain time to use social media can be worked upon gradually with the efforts of the user and their parent or guardian. This can avoid endless scrolling, thereby helping save and manage time effectively.
