Hello, fellow humans! Today, we're diving into a topic that we usually avoid talking about - combating stigma around mental health. Now, before you run for the hills and close the tab, stick with me because I promise you it will be worth it! It’s not a boring lecture session but we're going to go for an adventure that is both informative and entertaining. So, join me as we try to combat the stigma around mental health.

So, what exactly is stigma around mental health? Imagine it as a large, hideous monster beneath the bed that loves to feed on fear and ignorance. It's the idea that mental health problems should be hidden away in the darkest corners of our minds and are something to be ashamed of. But guess what? That creature? Completely imaginary and definitely nothing to be afraid of.

But people haven’t realised that yet. It’s still stigma that affects countless people in the world who live with mental health conditions. It affects everything, from their social life and professional opportunities to their self-perception. But we don't need to continue letting this stigma affect us when the powerful weapon to combat this stigma is knowledge and awareness, both of which are accessible to us all.

Speaking of which, did you know that mental health issues affect millions of people around the world and it is actually quite common? Yup, you heard that right! Anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, you name it, someone around the world is battling it. Which means not you, not me, not anyone is alone when it comes to facing mental health problems. And here's the most important part, it's nothing to be ashamed of! In fact, acknowledging and addressing our mental health struggles is a sign of strength, not weakness as said by Michelle Obama herself. Attaching the exact quote since we are often more likely to listen carefully if the words are said by someone famous, and in this case someone very intelligent and awesome herself!

““We should make it clear that getting help isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of strength.” ”

Now, the main reason for all the hushing and shushing are due to certain myths people believe in. So, what exactly are these misconceptions?

  • Myth #1: "People with mental health issues are 'crazy' or ‘mentally sick’." Um, excuse me? Newsflash: having a mental health condition doesn't make someone crazy any more than having a broken leg makes them a professional hopscotch player.

  • Myth #2: Therapy is only for the weak." Nope, wrong again! Therapy is like taking your brain to the gym, it helps you build your mental strength, enhance your resilience and punch any problems right in the face. Plus, you get to vent to a professional listener. Consider it as another tool in the toolbox of self-care. Could it BE more amazing?

Now that we've debunked two very common myths, let's talk about what we can do to crush mental health stigma once and for all.

Step one: Do your research! As mentioned earlier, knowledge is the greatest weapon and the more we know, the better equipped we are to combat stigma. Learning about different mental health conditions, their causes, and treatments can help dispel myths. And it’s not just about learning for ourselves, it’s about sharing that knowledge. Whether through conversations, social media, or events, spreading accurate information can make a big difference.

Step two: Speak up! One of the biggest hurdles in tackling mental health stigma is silence. Many people feel they must hide their problems due to fear of judgment or misunderstanding. It’s important that we start talking openly about mental health, just like we do with physical health. When we speak up, we not only help ourselves but also help others feel comfortable enough to share their problems.

Step three: Language Matters! The words we use can either help reduce stigma or reinforce it. Avoiding derogatory terms and using language that shows respect and understanding is very important. For instance, instead of saying someone “is schizophrenic,” we can say they “have schizophrenia.” It’s a small change, but it emphasizes that the person is more than their condition.

And finally, step four: Show compassion. Remember, we're all in this crazy, beautiful journey called life together. So, let's lift each other up, lend a listening ear, and spread kindness. Let’s make talking about mental health as normal as talking about the weather. Supporting policies that promote mental health awareness and access to care is also a way to create a more inclusive and supportive society.

So, there you have it! Mental health stigma may be difficult to deal with, but if armed with knowledge, compassion, and an open mind, we can get rid of the monster once and for all. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels safe and empowered to talk about their mental health.
