Hello! Today, we’re diving into a topic that might not come with a sunshine emoji but needs our attention—generational trauma in Indian families. You might have found yourself scratching your head about why certain patterns seem to repeat in your family; you’re not alone! Sometimes, these patterns imprint in our lives, often in ways we don’t even realise.

What Is Generational Trauma?

Imagine your grandmother's fear of being judged because she dared to dream beyond traditional roles. Fast forward a few decades, and that fear might show up in you as anxiety over pursuing your passion.

Generational trauma refers to the psychological effects that trauma can have across generations. Think of it as a heavy backpack filled with unaddressed emotions, beliefs, and behaviours that are passed down from parents to children—sometimes without even a conversation about it. This could be given by past influences in Indian families, social, cultural, or other influences, or even issues in the family that may not have been voiced before.

Why Does It Matter?

Understanding generational trauma is crucial for a few reasons. First, it helps us recognise that we’re not just dealing with our own experiences but our family’s past experiences too. This awareness can allow us to break free from patterns that no longer serve us and change for the better. Second, it gives a view on how culture forms part of or affects our mental health. In many Indian families, talking about feelings or seeking help can be seen as a sign of weakness.

Common Patterns in Indian Families

  •  Silent Suffering: Many families have a “stiff upper lip” mentality. Emotions are hidden beneath smiles, laughter, and other such nonchalant things as ‘it is alright’. This means that one accumulates so many feelings that are never communicated, and these will sooner or later spill over, often in unhealthy ways.

  •  Expectations and Pressure: The traditional emphasis on academic and career success can create a pressure cooker environment. Children might feel the weight of their parents’ unfulfilled dreams, leading to anxiety and feelings of inadequacy.

  •  Cultural norms: practices like arranged marriages, strict gender roles, and the stigma surrounding mental health can cultivate cycles of trauma. These norms often go unchallenged, trapping generations in outdated patterns.

How to Start Healing

Now that we’ve identified the “why,” let’s dive into the “how.” Here are some steps you can take to start healing those unspoken wounds:
