Depression is being on the brink of tears because you dropped your glass of water. It’s not having the urge to clean up the mess, rather you fall on the floor and cry. It's feeling safety in not brushing your hair for weeks at a time. Depression is one extreme to another, you're either so high with happiness or so down that you doubt the world will have colour again.

Everyone will tell you that it will get better, and you will dream of when it will be. Some days you can feel the sun radiating happiness through your body, and then other days you'll feel nothing and everything all at once. Depression is not easy, nor is it a quick fix. Depression and panic attacks can hit you at work, in your car, at a birthday party, shopping centre, or even at a club.

How to Overcome the Darkness

Navigating depression can be challenging, but there are steps you can take to support yourself along the way. Here are five strategies to enhance your well-being.

1. Prioritise Physical Activity: Incorporate regular exercise into your routine, even if it's just a short walk or gentle yoga session. Physical activity can boost your mood and energy levels, even when motivation is low. Consider inviting a friend to join you for added encouragement.

2. Nourish Your Body: Pay attention to your diet and hydration. Aim for a balanced intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while minimizing processed foods and sugary treats. Even if appetite is diminished, consuming nourishing foods and staying hydrated can support overall well-being.

3. Cultivate Creativity: Engage in activities that stimulate your creativity and bring joy. Whether it's painting, cooking, playing music, or spending time with loved ones, find outlets that ignite your passion and allow for self-expression. Laughter and light-hearted moments can help alleviate symptoms of depression.

4. Practice Positive Thinking: While it's important to acknowledge and process challenging emotions, dwelling excessively on problems can exacerbate feelings of hopelessness. Strive to balance discussions of difficulties with conversations about positive experiences and solutions. Challenge negative thoughts by actively seeking out and appreciating moments of joy and gratitude.

5. Foster Self-Compassion: Be gentle with yourself as you navigate through depression. Recognise that healing takes time and progress may be gradual. Show yourself kindness and understanding, just as you would to a friend facing similar struggles. Remember that seeking support from a therapist or mental health professional is a courageous step towards healing.

"Depression often speaks in shades of blue, reminding us that beneath even the brightest smiles may lie deep struggles. It's important to treat ourselves with kindness, finding outlets like journaling or creative expression to release pent-up emotions. Seeking support from understanding individuals is crucial, understanding that each person's experience of trauma is unique and valid. Rather than comparing ourselves to others, we should recognise our strength in enduring challenges. Everyone faces battles unseen, urging us to strive for personal growth and positivity each day. By cultivating love and optimism, we can gradually silence the negative voices and embrace a brighter perspective, knowing that change and transformation are always within reach."

Navigating through depression is undoubtedly a challenging journey, but it's one that's navigable with the right support, strategies, and mindset. While seeking help from a therapist or mental health professional is crucial, there are also steps you can take to support your own well-being.

Prioritise physical activity to boost mood and energy levels, nourish your body with healthy foods and hydration, and engage in activities that ignite your creativity and bring joy. Practice positive thinking by balancing discussions of difficulties with moments of gratitude and solution-oriented thinking. Most importantly, foster self-compassion and patience with yourself as you navigate through the ups and downs of depression.
