Hello, lovely people!

As a fellow human being living in the 21st century, I can confidently say that humans are the most advanced, evolved, powerful, and intellectual creatures who have walked the Earth. From the creation of the first nuclear bomb to the invention of electric vehicles; as humans we have proven that we are capable of even achieving the impossible. Although we are the smartest creatures on the planet, we often overlook one of the simplest concepts that help us become the best version of ourselves and that is personal well-being. As humans, we tend to like being exceptional in everything from academics to playing a game of Monopoly with our best friends. This attitude helps us reach new heights In life, but it also puts us in competition with each other and soon plants the seeds of self-criticism in us. This becomes a slow poison that destroys our personality, well-being, and ability to enjoy the simple things in life. This is why we need to make sure that we have an antidote to reverse the effects; and that my dear friends, is the practice of self-compassion. If you're wondering about this life-changing medicine, the following article will provide you with effective steps to practice and master the art of self-compassion to rejuvenate from the cruel hold that self-criticism has over an individual.

Importance of practicing self-compassion:

Self-compassion is the practice of treating oneself with the same amount of kindness, understanding, and care that one would offer to someone during times of difficulty and failure. Practising self-compassion improves our overall mental health, boosts self-esteem, and enhances happiness. A small amount of self-love can go a long way in improving our empathy, and compassion for ourselves and others and enable us to learn from our mistakes while also creating space for personal and professional growth. Most importantly, it enhances the quality of life by helping us foster a kind and understanding relationship with ourselves and further down the line, boosts our overall life satisfaction and also our happiness levels. Now, if you've understood the importance and you are eager to know about the techniques to master this art, here are a few of them to begin with:

1. Mindful Self-awareness:

  • The first step towards self-compassion starts with mindful self-awareness, which essentially involves paying attention to our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations in the present moment with a non-judgemental and accepting attitude. Recognizing and acknowledging our emotions without judgment instead of suppressing or ignoring them allows us to experience our emotions fully without being overwhelmed.

  •  Practising mindful breathing and mindful breathing exercises can help ground us in the present moment. The exercise could be as simple as focusing on our breath—inhaling slowly, holding for a few seconds, and then exhaling slowly— creating a space for self-reflection and calming our minds.

 2. Self-Kindness:

  • Self-kindness is the practice of being warm, understanding, and compassionate towards ourselves, especially in times of difficulty. It is important to replace our self-critical thoughts with supportive, encouraging words and remind ourselves that we are deserving of love and it’s okay to make mistakes.

  •  Engaging in Self-Care and prioritizing activities that nurture and rejuvenate us such as a warm bath, reading a book, or going for a walk in nature, etc helps in reinforcing the idea that we are worthy of care and attention.

3. Common Humanity

  • Common humanity is recognizing that all people share certain common experiences as a result of being human. This includes suffering, mistakes, and imperfection.

  • This concept helps us understand that we are not alone in our struggles and that certain struggles are a part of the experience of being a human. It also reminds us that suffering is a part of the human experience and we are not alone since we can always talk to our friends, family, or support groups about how we’re feeling and gain some comfort and perspective from the process.

4. Forgiveness and Acceptance

  • Forgiveness is a crucial process of releasing resentment, anger, or bitterness towards someone who has wronged us, including ourselves. Similarly, acceptance involves embracing reality as it is, without resistance or denial.

  • Holding onto our past mistakes can hinder our ability to move forward, therefore it is essential to practice self-forgiveness by acknowledging our mistakes and also by accepting our Imperfections as they are a part of what makes us unique.

5. Professional support

  • Professional support such as seeking help from trained and qualified individuals is a crucial step in the journey as mental health professionals can provide guidance and support in developing self-compassion. Attending therapy sessions will help us address and identify the underlying issues and learn practical strategies for self-care.

  •  Similarly participating in workshops or courses focused on self-compassion can provide us valuable insights and techniques. Additionally, these environments also offer a sense of community and shared learning which once again plays a role in developing our self-compassion.

  • Positive affirmations are statements that one repeats to oneself either through saying it out loud, writing, or reading. It usually  includes statements like “I am worthy”, “I am perfect" and "I don't need to change any part of me”, etc which can help us develop a positive and compassionate mindset

  •  Spending a few minutes each day visualizing our ideal self and treating ourselves with kindness in every situation will help in embedding self-compassion into our subconscious

Practice and preach- let us make a change for ourselves and others
