Living with Bipolar Disorder

Have you ever spent much money on luxury items and started several ambitious projects, only to abandon them abruptly? Now, you isolate yourself and seem uninterested in activities he once enjoyed.

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depressive illness, is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood swings can affect sleep, energy, activity levels, judgment, behaviour, and the ability to think clearly.

Symptoms:

Mania/Hypomania Episodes:

  1. increased energy, activity and restlessness

  2. euphoric mood or irritability

  3. decreased need for sleep

  4. rapid speech and racing thoughts

Depressive Episodes:

  1. persistent sadness or emptiness

  2. loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities

  3. fatigue and decreased energy

  4. difficulty in concentrating

Managing Mood Swings

1.      Engage actively in your treatment

Engaging actively with your bipolar disorder is essential. This means thoroughly educating yourself about your condition. By doing so, you'll not only understand the disorder but also be able to recognize your symptoms clearly and use available resources to manage them effectively.

To actively engage in your treatment, you need to:

Communicate with Your Healthcare Provider:  Don't hesitate to ask questions and clarify doubts. Open communication is key to understanding your treatment and progress.

Be Regular with Therapy: Consistency in therapy is crucial. Regular sessions and practicing the skills learned in therapy can significantly help manage your symptoms. Therapy provides valuable insights on how to cope with your disorder, handle problems, and manage mood swings effectively.

2.      Monitor and evaluate your triggers

Manage mood swings by recognizing early warning signs. Address symptoms promptly to prevent escalation. Identify patterns and triggers to take proactive steps, develop coping strategies, and adjust your treatment plan with your healthcare provider.

3.      Maintain a schedule:

Having a daily routine can help take your mind off worries and contribute to a sense of stability. Sticking to a schedule provides structure and can significantly enhance your well-being. Here are some aspects to consider:

  • Ensure you sleep and eat meals at regular times.

  • Allocate time for meditation, hobbies, and social activities.

  • Be consistent with taking your medication and attending therapy sessions.

What Are Some Treatment Options?

1. Behavior therapy:

This therapy focuses on short-term modalities such as social skills training, problem solving techniques, assertive training, self-control therapy, activity scheduling and decision-making techniques.

This therapy helps in enhancing an individual’s daily functioning, including maintaining routines, managing stress and fostering healthier relationships.

2. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT):

CBT aims at correcting depressive negative cognitions (ideations) such as hopelessness, worthlessness, helplessness and pessimistic ideas, and replacing them with new cognitive and behavioural responses.

CBT is useful in mild to moderate, non-bipolar depression and can be used with or without somatic treatment.

3. Interpersonal Therapy (IPT):

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) attempts to recognize and explore interpersonal stressors, role disputes and transitions, social isolation, or social skills deficits, which act as precipitants for depression.

IPT is useful in the treatment of mild to moderate unipolar depression.
