Getting laid off from work is an extremely daunting experience and it was most prevalent during the pandemic of COVID-19. Even today in 2024, going through unemployment alone can be scary and pretty nerve-wrecking. Having a 9-5 or even a freelancing position offers job security and income security for a long while and individuals who experience job loss may fear for their security, especially income
An individual can experience a myriad of emotions as he/she faces the loss of a job which may take a toll on his mental and physical well-being. It can be really daunting to figure out your next steps for your career while experiencing job loss. It is important to touch ground and face reality about the fact and try to move on as soon as possible.
Being in denial is dangerous for individuals who refuse to believe that they have been laid off and do not have a job anymore which guarantees their income security. A vast majority of the population eventually turns to negative behaviors of coping which may include smoking or drinking to compensate for their unemployment.
The most important thing to remember is that everything eventually ends and this might be a tough phase that will also blow over eventually. All waves come and go and the wave of unemployment will also come and go and before we know it, we will be back to morning routines before work and the happiness of job security.
During this transition from having a job to unemployment, it is essential to try to look at the bright side of things, which might be that we now have time to indulge in activities that we wouldn’t be able to do otherwise.
How to Cope with Negative Feelings
There are many strategies one can adopt to keep themselves busy from the constant negative thoughts of unemployment, which will also make them feel better about their current position. These strategies include:
Connect with Nature
It can be beneficial to wake up in the morning and take a walk first thing in the morning which can also set the tone for the entire day where the individual can be productive and do more things he/she is interested in. Soaking nature’s Vitamin D can be beneficial for the mental growth of the individual and exercise also helps get the adrenaline rush out of the body.

Invest in Various Hobbies
Some individuals love to paint and draw but because of the work stress they usually end up letting their art be covered in dust balls. During this period of transition, picking up an old hobby can help you connect with yourself and you can immerse yourself in these various activities which may provide momentary happiness.
Connect with Friends and Loved Ones
During this transition, our friends and loved ones are our constant support. Spending some quality time with them can stimulate our brain cells and provide us with endorphins which will ultimately boost our mood and confidence that we do not have to go through this difficult period alone. Laughing and sharing old stories with friends always lifts our spirits and helps us connect with ourselves too!
Acknowledge Your Feelings
Understanding how and why you are facing the hard reality of unemployment can be daunting and it can also be extremely difficult but it is important that we go through this process and realize our trigger points and make a note of them if ever a situation comes up which may cause us to spiral. Acknowledging our feelings is important and speaking up is important instead of bottling up emotions that may resurface as ugly and negative emotions.
Focus on Self-Care
Coming up with a basic self-care routine can help take our mind off things regarding unemployment which may usually keep us awake at night. Using sheet masks and other such items provides statutory relief to our minds and can make us feel lighter and happier.
