What is self-discovery?

Self-discovery is a journey of understanding ourselves and what truly brings us happiness. Self-discovery is more of an internal satisfaction rather than external validation. It's not about getting a gold medal at the end; it's about figuring out what makes us happy and what brings a smile to our face. Typically, there are three pillars of self-discovery-

  1. Self-awareness- It involves introspection, as in, learning what we like, feel, and our personality or character.

  2. Discomfort- The journey of self-discovery can cause a bit of discomfort as it may involve facing things about ourselves that we may not like, but it is an essential step towards self-discovery.

  3. Intentional living-  We will gradually know what we want to do in life and take steps according to it.

So, there are various components that fall under the three pillars of self-discovery, which lead to unveiling true potential for happiness. So, let us explore how we can enjoy the journey of becoming our best selves!

  •  Acceptance- It doesn’t involve accepting exploitation against you, but it involves accepting your fate. We should not regret things that have already been done but accept them and work positively towards improving them if we are unsatisfied with the outcome.

  • Spontaneous living- It involves being open to experiencing new things and letting our inner child out! Sometimes, we might wish to play on the swings like old times while passing by the park, but we never do it; here come spontaneous living when we actually run towards the swing and let our inner child out without caring about what we would look like in front of the parents of the children who are playing in the park. One thing to remember is that the actions should be reasonable and not cause any harm to others, whether emotional or physical.

  • Journaling- We should regularly write down our thoughts, feelings and emotions in diaries or journals. This can help us understand more about ourselves and interpret the emotions and what caused us to feel those emotions.

  • Appreciation and gratitude- We should take the time to appreciate small things in our everyday lives and convey gratitude towards the things or people we love and who care about us. For example, we should appreciate the scent of flowers and stars at night, thank our parents for giving us a chance to experience these small things,  and thank our friends who always support us, and many more.

  • Learning- Acquiring a skill never goes to waste. We should learn new concepts or things which we enjoy doing. Learning is not only about taking classes related to our careers. It is about acquiring skills that truly make us happy, like learning to paint, crochet, horse riding, or scuba diving!

  • Therapy- There are many stereotypes about therapy, such that the one who is facing some mental health issue should only go to therapy, but you can also go to a therapy session to just talk and express whatever you are feeling, what you want to do in future or for taking some advice for the near future. We have a number of skilled therapists at Heart It Out, so check it out!

Finding ourselves is like a personal adventure rather than a strict plan. We should stop seeking approval from others and discover what truly makes us happy. Try new things and be open to surprises! Enjoy the journey, including all its bumps and pits. We should embrace our past, appreciate small things, and be brave in exploring who we are. This journey is what leads to true happiness, so enjoy every step!
